Thoughts, Ideas, Strategies, and Challenges

Hello Group 2!

Here's the problem again. Post your ideas as comments here!

The famous Lewis School of Mathematics is building a new section as more families move into the fabulous city of Lewistown. The following numbers of families have moved into Lewistown over the past 4 years: 3 more families than the first year, then 8 more families the following year, then 13 more families the next year, and 18 more families the past year. If this pattern continues, in how many more years will a total of 43 families have moved into town?

  3. Ithink it would take 9 yearsfor there to be a total of 43 famillies because i see in the pattern it adds by 5 each time.
    3+5=8
    8+5=13.
    13+5=18.
and the whole pattern would go
    3,8,13,18,23,28,33,38,43 etc.
and each number equals one year.
    3 famillies=1 year,
    8 famillies=2 years,
    and 13 famillies=3 years etc.
so just to be clear it would take 9 years.
I found the anwser by finding the difference bettween the numbers that ms lewis gave us and then seeing if it would equal to 43 in the end.
    i hope you understand.

    with all due respect,
    Najat

  4. I think:
    8-3=5
    3+5=8
    8+5=13
    13+5=18
then, i kept adding 5 until i get to 43:
    23,28,33,38,43
each number equals to an year:
    3 famillies=1 year
    8 famillies=2 years
    43 famillies=9 years
this is how i found the answer!!
